Hyperreality

Hyperreality is an alternative reality or environments which are depicted from images and creates a new reality. A space that incorporates hyperreality contrasts with its surrounding environment and forms a unique experience. The concept of hyperreality is that once you are within the environment you are not aware of what is happening outside of the space as if you were in a new reality bubble. We use hyperreality in the modern day as consumers are seeking contemporary one-off experiences which cannot found in the original idea of chain hotels. Companies are now using hyperreality in their hotels to immerse their customers in a more personalised space by redesigning each of their hotels rather than producing one design for their whole chain. The design of these hyperreality hotels or experiences are inspired by images in the social and consumer society which fulfils a new market where people are willing to pay for an experience over a tangible good. The scale of hyperreality experiences will vary depending on the wanted outcome for the client, for example, a nightclub will have less of an exaggerated hyper-realistic experience than one that fully immerses you in their brand like Disneyland.

Our wanted experience for our hotels is to show off the unknown heritage of the Gold Coast and the current culture. The hotel located in the former Tallebudgera post office, that was opened in 1878 and closed in 1958, will show the customers the hinterland side of the Gold Coast. That includes bush walking, exploring the national parks and the local Australian wildlife. We will be adding a reception and a public café to the site to replicate a sense of gathering that the post office was once seen as. The Post office was used as the main stock route between Queensland and New South Wales and created communication for the rural communities. Another hotel will be in the Kirra Shelter Shed along the edge of Kirra beach. We are wanting to keep the beach views and create a relaxed, ‘beachy’ feel to the space. The shelter shed will be showing the surf and beach culture of the Gold Coast, letting the customers frequent the beach, local beachside suburbs and water sports. Our third hotel room be in Surfers Paradise and have a Gold Coast city vibe. We will use an existing kiosk that is on the beach front and add a recycled container ship as the hotel room, so the customers can experience the city and beach life of the Gold Coast in a modern and sustainable way. The container ship represents the modern, new side of the Gold Coast and the kiosk will represent the retail side which is a big part of the modern Gold Coast that brings tourists and business to the city. The customers will be right in the center of Surfers Paradise and be able to experience the beach, nightlife, retail and restaurants that is all just around the corner. All hotel rooms will represent the location they are in by the interior experience.
Pixel Hotel

The Pixel Hotel was established in 2006 and is a combination of individual hotels that are not in a single building. They are distributed around Austria in the city and countryside. It is seen as a project that revisits the idea of the hotel experience in a particular location. The hotels enable the user to experience different cultures, buildings, unusual accommodation and different surroundings.

The accommodation project aims to repair, renovate and restore unused spaces and create specific installations that represent the surroundings. The historical and cultural aspects are closely managed to connect with the building and surroundings in the redesign. They choose from vacant retail spaces, lofts and workshops, industrial hangars, business premises, council housing, galleries and public spaces to create the Pixel Hotels.
There are eight locations around Austria in Linz, Enns and Engelhartszell. The local communities around each hotel are used for services and catering to continue the cultural experience. Users are able to explore local towns, attractions and countryside’s.

After learning about the Pixel Hotel, we realized that people are starting to explore new and unusual ways of accommodation. Our three hotels are located in three separate areas of the Gold Coast, allowing the user to experience different surroundings and environments that the Gold Coast has to offer, similar to the Pixel Hotel.
